On this day in 2008, India made history by launching its first mission to the Moon — Chandrayaan-1. Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the orbiter was designed to circle the Moon at an altitude of 100 kilometres for two years. The mission marked India’s entry into lunar exploration and led to the groundbreaking discovery of water molecules on the Moon’s surface. Since then, India has launched two more lunar missions, with Chandrayaan-3 becoming the first to achieve a soft landing near the Moon’s south pole.
