Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took charge as the country’s interim prime minister after days of violent anti-corruption protests. Her appointment came following intense negotiations between President Ramchandra Paudel, the army, and protest leaders, amid unrest that left 51 people dead and more than 1,300 injured. Soon after, President Paudel announced the dissolution of parliament and set fresh elections for March 5, 2026. The protests, largely driven by Gen Z demonstrators, forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. India welcomed the transition, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating Karki’s appointment.
