#Firstpost LIVE: Nepal Lifts Social Media Ban After 19 Killed in Gen-Z Protests; PM Oli Blames Vested Groups
After at least 19 people died in violent protests over the banning of 26 renowned social media platforms, the Nepalese government moved to reverse its decision on Monday. The protests, which broke out in the capital Kathmandu and other parts of the country by the young crowd, called for the lifting of the ban and demanded action on alleged corruption. Demonstrators stormed into a restricted area near the parliament and vandalised its gates. Police officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. During the unrest, around 400 people were injured, including over 100 police personnel. The army was also deployed in the capital as the situation became increasingly volatile. Authorities imposed a curfew in several areas of the capital. Following the protests, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident and blamed various vested interest groups for the violence. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak also resigned. The United Nations has called for a swift and transparent investigation into the killings.
