India: Stampede at TVK Chief Vijay’s Rally Kills st Least 40 in Tamil Nadu | N18G
A stampede-like situation in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu killed at least 39 people and left several injured. The chaos erupted during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s rally. According to police, the crowd swelled as actor-turned-politician Vijay arrived. The rally, reportedly intended for 10,000 attendees, surged to more than double that number. A commission headed by a retired justice has been appointed to probe the incident. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered condolences to the families of the victims. The PM Office has announced ₹200,000 ($2,255) ex gratia for the victims’ kin and ₹50,000 ($564) compensation for the injured. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin announced ₹1 million ($11,277) compensation for the victim’s families, while Vijay announced ₹2 million ($22,556) for victims’ families and ₹200,000 for the injured.
