India is celebrating its 79th Independence Day today. In his address to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India will launch its own semiconductor chips by the end of 2025. PM Modi noted that the idea of setting up semiconductor manufacturing plants was discussed 50 to 60 years ago; however, it never materialised. PM Modi stated that India is now in a “mission mode” to effect change. He added in his address that by the end of this year, “Made in India” semiconductor chips, made by the people of India, will hit the market. Furthermore, the Prime Minister also linked the semiconductor push to India’s wider goal of becoming self-reliant in energy.
