An evidence-handling operation at Nowgam police station in Srinagar turned fatal on Friday night when a powerful accidental explosion killed nine people and injured 27 others. The blast occurred as officers were extracting samples from nearly 2,900 kg of explosive material seized in Haryana’s Faridabad during an inter-State terror investigation. According to J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat, the material was highly sensitive and unstable, and the team had been working with “extreme caution” before the detonation occurred. Officials said the confiscated IED-making components had been stored at the police station as part of the ongoing probe. The Union Home Ministry has confirmed that forensic examinations are under way to determine the precise cause of the explosion.
