In a major blow to Qatar’s mediation efforts in the DR Congo, the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have suspended the peace talks, vowing not to return until previous ceasefire deal commitments are met. The two sides were supposed to finalise a peace deal on Monday (August 18), after Qatar reportedly shared a draft peace agreement with the DRC government and the M23 on Sunday (August 17). However, the deadline passed as both parties continued to accuse each other of ceasefire violations. Another point of contention remains the release of prisoners mentioned in the declaration of principles signed by the two sides in Qatar in July. The M23 has demanded the immediate release of over 700 prisoners to resume talks, but the DRC is not willing to comply with it.
