Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, joined by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressed a joint press conference on Dhanteras to highlight the impact of GST 2.0 on India’s festive economy. Sitharaman said the revamped tax system, launched on the first day of Navratri, has been well received, noting that tax benefits have been passed on to consumers across 54 essential items. Introduced on September 22, the ‘Next-Generation GST’ or ‘GST Bachat Utsav’ simplifies compliance, introduces a two-rate structure, and lowers levies on key goods, aiming to boost consumption and inject ₹2 lakh crore into the economy amid strong festive demand.
