CONAIE argue the rise in fuel prices will disproportionately hurt Indigenous and poor communities by driving up transportation and living costs.

“Installed fascism, hate speech. How does he (Noboa) dare to say that he is going to expel our indigenous comrades from our Ecuadorian territory. If the indigenous comrades are the owners of these lands,” said Gabriela Burbano, a university student who took part in the protests.

Social, artistic, and student groups held a sit-in outside Ecuador’s Central University (UCE), blocking Avenida America, but by around 6 pm police cleared the area, dispersing the demonstrators with tear gas.

The demonstrators expressed solidarity with the families of the indigenous community member killed during the September 28 protests in Imbabura, as well as with at least a dozen detainees.

Since their start on September 23, the protests have swelled in response to additional government measures like social security reforms, with CONAIE vowing to press on with the national strike while the government refuses talks and denounces the unrest as ‘terrorist acts.’
