New types of drugs packaged like Chinese tea leaves continue to be discovered along the coast of Jeju Island.

The Coast Guard is investigating whether these drugs are being smuggled in by sea.

A police cordon has been set up near the Jeju Port passenger terminal, where many people come and go.

On the 1st, a brick-shaped object wrapped in Chinese tea leaf packaging was found on the rocky shore near Jeju Port.

Inside was not tea leaves, but 1 kg of white crystals.

[Reporter/Voice Altered: “The tea bag was a bit hard, and when I opened it, it was a white powder, so I reported it. I had seen articles related to drugs, so I thought something was off.”]

Earlier, on the 31st of last month, a similar 1 kg object wrapped in tea leaf packaging was also discovered on the coast of Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.

The Coast Guard conducted a preliminary test and confirmed that it was all a new type of drug called ketamine, which has strong hallucinogenic effects.

One kilogram of ketamine is enough for over 30,000 people to use simultaneously.

This is the fourth time that drugs disguised as Chinese tea leaves have been found along the coast of Jeju since the first discovery in Seongsan in September.

Whether these drugs were intended to be brought into Jeju by sea or if they fell off a ship is still unclear to the investigating authorities.

The Jeju Coast Guard has requested international cooperation from four countries, including Taiwan, and has decided to strengthen coastal patrols in preparation for drug smuggling.
