CNA Why is Trump threatening a US takeover of Greenland? Analyst weighs in

United States President Donald Trump said Wednesday (Jan 7) that the US will “always be there for NATO”, but added he doubts the alliance would come to Washington’s aid in times of need. His comments come as tensions within NATO rise over the White House’s push to acquire Greenland through a range of options, which could include military action. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet Danish and Greenland officials at their request next week to discuss the Arctic territory. Andrew Hyde, senior fellow at Washington-based think tank Stimson Center, tells CNA’s Asia First that many in Washington have been “struggling to understand” Trump’s threat of a US takeover of Greenland.
