CNA ‘Very worrisome’: US threats against Iran point to possible military strike, analyst says

The United States and Iran are engaged in escalating tensions over Tehran’s nuclear programme, with US President Donald Trump warning on Wednesday (Jan 28) that time is running out for a deal. The US has moved military assets into the region. Iran has said it would retaliate immediately if attacked, pointing to US bases within missile range.
Barbara Slavin, distinguished fellow for the Middle East and North Africa at the Stimson Center, tells CNA’s Asia First that the pace and intensity of recent threats are “very worrisome.” She argues that US demands, which include curbing Iran’s nuclear activities, missile programme and regional influence, amount to total capitulation, making compromise difficult and increasing the risk of a military clash.
