The Singapore paddlers who 'chose sportsmanship over winning'

It would have been a crucial point for them, but when their opponents were shown a red card, Singapore paddlers Izaac Quek and Koen Pang disagreed with the umpire’s decision.

They chose to return the point to their Argentinian opponents Horacio Cifuentes and Santiago Lorenzo.

Argentina eventually beat the home favourites in the men’s doubles quarterfinals at the World Table Tennis Singapore Smash 2026, but Quek and Pang’s move didn’t go unnoticed.

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam hailed their show of sportsmanship. “Respect to Izaac and Koen. Better to lose the right way than to win the wrong way,” he wrote on Facebook.

“They chose sportsmanship over winning. It’s how life is best lived.”
