CNA Starmer’s China visit opens door to pragmatic UK-China reset, says analyst
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has begun his landmark visit to China, the first by a UK leader in eight years. The visit comes amid efforts to mend ties and recalibrate London’s approach towards Beijing, following years of tensions over issues including Chinese technology giant Huawei, Hong Kong and human rights concerns. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, Kerry Brown, director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College London, describes what the visit could mean for both countries – from restarting economic and financial cooperation to possible technology collaboration. Brown says China also sees value in improving its international standing through pragmatic engagement, but warns there are risks involved, including pressure from Washington, making clear guardrails essential in any reset of UK-China ties.
