Rents in Kampong Glam are rising sharply, with some tenants reporting a doubling in recent years. Small businesses along Haji Lane say higher rents, aggressive bidding and a growing practice of subletting are forcing them out of one of Singapore’s most historic districts. As tourist-oriented shops and big brands move in, long-time tenants warn the area’s cultural identity is at risk. The Kampong Gelam Alliance, a business improvement district, says boosting footfall and engagement – rather than regulating rents – may be key to helping shops survive. Nadirah Zaidi reports.
