In 2003, journalist Ersa Siregar was kidnapped while covering the Aceh conflict, and later killed in a shootout. His son, Ridhwan, was just 19.

More than two decades later, Ridhwan, now a journalist himself, returned to Aceh to find out what happened, tracking down witnesses, former fighters and military personnel and talking to them. Here’s his story.
