CNA Hong Kong leader orders independent probe, urges system reform after deadly Wang Fuk Court fire
Hong Kong leader John Lee called for “thorough investigation and serious reform” on Tuesday (Dec 2) and said the government will set up an independent inquiry into the fire tragedy at a Hong Kong residential estate that claimed at least 151 lives last week.
Lee said at least 25 arrests have been made by police and the independent anti-corruption commission investigating the deadliest fire in decades, linked to substandard renovation materials.
“The shortcomings will be addressed. The bottlenecks will be addressed. And we will reform the whole building renovation system to ensure that such things will not happen again,” Mr Lee told a news conference.
Investigators have combed all but two of the seven burnt-out towers, finding bodies of residents in stairwells and on rooftops, trapped as they tried to flee the flames. Around 30 people are still missing.
