CNA EU–Mercosur trade deal close to signing, promising economic gains despite fierce farmer opposition

A landmark deal that would create the world’s largest free trade area could be signed within days, marking a major geopolitical and economic win for the European Union (EU) – but only if leaders can overcome fierce resistance from powerful farming lobbies. The long-awaited EU–Mercosur agreement, involving the bloc and five South American countries – Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay – has been more than two decades in the making.
