U.S. officials reportedly rejected a secret Venezuelan government proposal that would have seen President Nicolás Maduro step down in three years as part of a plan to ease tensions with Washington. According to the Associated Press, the plan had Maduro voluntarily handing over power to Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who would complete his term but would not stand for reelection—an arrangement meant to guarantee a political transition without repeating past leadership. The White House, however, dismissed the offer, citing longstanding concerns about Maduro’s legitimacy and alleged involvement in narco-trafficking.
