Major Snow, the 21st solar term on the Chinese lunar calendar, marks the official beginning of midwinter. In 2025, it falls on December 7. By this time, the temperature in most parts of China has significantly decreased, and precipitation turns from rain to snow or sleet. In northern China, the natural scenery is often described as “ice blockading for hundreds of miles and snow flying through thousands of miles.” A popular folk custom during this period is curing meat. People also enjoy various winter activities, such as skating, skiing and snowball fights. To ward off the cold, it is common to consume warming and nourishing foods. Major Snow is not merely a node in the natural cycle; it also embodies a unique Chinese understanding of winter. The folk belief that “a timely snow promises a good harvest” reflects the wisdom of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, as a thick snow cover can help wintering crops survive the cold and provide moisture and nutrients in the upcoming spring.
