British football club Brighton apologized after a club social media post featuring Kaoru Mitoma and an academy player holding up an image of a Japanese WWII soldier. The post sparked anger and disappointment among fans in Asia, which suffered under Japanese atrocities during WWII. Jack Forsdike, a British social media operator, recently highlighted the challenges in Europe regarding the understanding of Japan’s role in World War II. He said that many Europeans, even in basic history classes, fail to grasp the gravity of Japan’s alliance with Nazi Germany as part of the Axis powers. Forsdike explained that, while some may know this fact on a surface level, the distance of time has turned it into an abstract concept. Many are unaware of the atrocities Japan committed during the war, and there’s a lack of outreach or comparative work in Europe to deepen public awareness. This knowledge gap underscores the critical importance of history education in shaping our understanding of past global conflicts.
