The labor sector has urged the National Assembly to pass the bill to raise the retirement age from sixty to sixty-five by the end of this year.
This was a campaign promise of President Lee Jae Myung, and the ruling party is also aiming for legislation within the year, so social consensus will be key.
Reporter Choi Yoo-kyung has the details.
[Report]
The two major labor unions visiting the National Assembly pressured for the passage of the ‘retirement age extension’ bill within the year.
Starting in 2033, the age for receiving the national pension will be unified to 65 years based on birth year, and if the current retirement age of 60 is maintained, there will be a five-year ‘income gap’.
[Kim Dong-myung/Chairman of the /Federation of Korean Trade Unions: “The government is just standing by with its arms crossed, without any measures. The positions of labor and management have already been sufficiently confirmed…”]
[Yang Kyung-soo/Chairman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions: “We are not saying to immediately set it to 65 from next year, but to extend the retirement age in line with the pension eligibility age…”]
The Democratic Party expressed its commitment to finalize the ‘retirement age of 65’ legislation within the year.
They emphasized the need for extending the retirement age for the income of the elderly, the stability of pension finances, and the utilization of skilled labor, planning to start by reconciling differences between labor and management and across generations through a special committee within the party.
[Kim Byung-kee/Floor Leader of the Democratic Party/Nov. 3: “A public forum for social dialogue that encompasses generations and labor and management is necessary. We must seriously address the retirement age extension and reach a conclusion as soon as possible…”]
Currently, there are a total of 12 retirement age extension bills proposed in the National Assembly.
The Democratic Party aims to extend the retirement age to 65 while removing the obligation for employers to reform their wage systems, while the People Power Party emphasizes maintaining the obligation for wage system reform but giving companies the option to choose between extending the retirement age and re-employing workers.
The Democratic Party plans to prepare a legislative proposal at the party’s special committee level, considering concerns from the business sector about worsening youth employment and issues related to wage system reform.
