Becoming Chinese? Start with Festivals: South Africans embrace Spring Festival
Drinking hot water, eating homemade congee, practicing mindful movement with Baduanjin – for anyone not living under a rock, the lifestyle trend of “Becoming Chinese” is hard to miss. With fans online declaring they have “entered a very Chinese phase of their lives,” here is how to tap into your inner Chinese, starting with this year’s Spring Festival.

Nokukhanya Zulu, a language specialist from South Africa, visited a Chinese New Year event in Cape Town and experienced a series of festive activities. One of Cape Town’s landmarks, the V&A Waterfront, was clad in red and gold. Many locals joined the Chinese community in writing Chinese characters, tasting traditional food, and making fans to experience the unique charm of Chinese culture. Dong Gang, director of the Cape Town Huaxing Arts Troupe, said that more and more people have fallen in love with the Chinese culture, and he hopes the Chinese New Year event can bring the authentic atmosphere of the Spring Festival to more people in South Africa.
