Hegseth says Iran ceasefire offers 'chance at real peace' as both sides claim victory | BBC News

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said “we have a real chance at peace” after a conditional two-week ceasefire was agreed under “overwhelming pressure” with Iran.

Both sides have claimed victory – Iran says it will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and that its “victory in the field would also be consolidated” in upcoming talks.

In a press conference, Hegseth praised US President Donald Trump for having “made history” and said it was a “capital V military victory” – claiming that Iran’s military was rendered combat ineffective for years to come.

The defence secretary also suggested that if it had refused Washington’s terms then “the next targets would have been their power plants, their bridges, and oil and energy infrastructure”.
