Barbados has ‘right to borrow money from sources of its choice’
Barbados is putting international lenders on notice that it is a sovereign nation and has the right to borrow money from sources of its choice.
This is being made clear by Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn.
Minister Straughn made the comment amid developments on the international scene, where certain loans are being conditioned on support for particular institutions.
He says it is therefore important Barbadians understand and appreciate that the way a country manages risk is to ensure that it diversifies its lending sources as well as the currencies in which it borrows.
He was addressing the Caribbean Debt Forum at the Hilton Barbados.
The one-day forum brings together regional and international policymakers, economists, and development partners to discuss strategies for strengthening debt management and financial resilience across the Caribbean.
There, Minister Straughn also highlighted the importance of diversifying the ways small island developing states access financing.
