In a move that surprised Japan’s political world, the Nippon Ishin no Kai, a small populist party centered in Osaka, formed a coalition with the Liberal Democratic Party that ushered in Japan’s first female prime minister. The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan is pleased to welcome one of the leaders of that party, Mr. Fumitake Fujita, for a press conference to speak about that unexpected alliance, what he hopes it will achieve — and indeed, how long it might last.

Ishin no Kai, also known by the English name Japan Innovation Party, is a right-leaning group that holds most of its Diet seats in Osaka but has failed to expand elsewhere. While it agrees with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on topics like national security, it holds idiosyncratic positions on a few issues that don’t have full LDP support, particularly a call to shrink the number of Diet seats. The party has also come under more intense scrutiny since forming the alliance, with media reports questioning use of public funds.
