West Bengal to Assam: Know full detail of SIR Phase 2 announced by Election Commission
Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar announced the EC’s plan for phase 2 of SIR (Special Intensive Revision), which is to be carried out in 12 States/UTs. He listed the names of all the states and UTs under this second phase of SIR, namely, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep Island, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Answering to the media questions, he clarifies that this would not have been applicable to Assam, as under India’s Citizenship Act, there are separate provisions for Assam. Under the supervision of the Supreme Court, the checking of citizenship there is about to be completed.
He also clarified that Aadhaar Card will be accepted as an optional identity proof, but cannot be used as a proof for citizenship.
He said, “Supreme Court has said that Aadhaar is to be used as per Aadhaar Act. Sec 9 of Aadhaar Act says that Aadhaar will not be the proof of domicile or citizenship. Supreme Court has given several rulings that Aadhaar is not a proof of date of birth.”
