“We’re drowning in demand”: NYC turns to rescued produce as federal food aid shrinks
Amid ongoing federal funding cuts to food assistance programs, nonprofits across New York City are seeing a sharp rise in demand for rescued produce. At Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx, nonprofit Sharing Excess works with wholesalers to recover unsold but perfectly edible fruits and vegetables—food that would otherwise end up in the trash. Boxes of bruised melons, romaine lettuce, and zucchini are sorted and redirected to emergency food providers across the city, free of charge.
