US Defence Secretary Hegseth declines to confirm possible military strikes inside Venezuela
U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday (November 1) declined to confirm whether Washington is considering military strikes inside Venezuela, amid rising speculation about expanding U.S. operations targeting drug trafficking. Since early September, U.S. strikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean and Pacific have reportedly killed dozens, escalating tensions with Caracas. Speaking at a news briefing on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Hegseth was joined by his counterparts from Australia, Japan, and the Philippines. When asked about a possible “show of force” in the South China Sea, he said the U.S. had “many options and capabilities” in the region but would not reveal specific plans. The comments come as Washington and Manila announced the formation of a new joint task force to strengthen cooperation in strategic areas, including the South China Sea — a key global trade route handling more than $3 trillion in annual maritime commerce.
