Ukrainian Prez Zelenskyy shares warm greetings at White House, handshake with Vance grabs eyeballs
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy gathered with U.S. President Donald Trump and seven European leaders on Monday (August 18) for an extraordinary summit at the White House to discuss a path to ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. Zelenskiy, chided for his appearance and manner in February, adjusted both. Wearing more formal clothing and repeatedly expressing his gratitude to Trump, he was greeted by a far more complimentary U.S. president than in the past. In footage released by the Ukrainian Presidential Press Service, Zelenskiy is also seen shaking hands and exchanging brief words with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who had joined Trump in the public criticism of the Ukrainian leader in February. Trump told Zelenskiy that the U.S. would help guarantee Ukraine’s security in any deal to end Russia’s war there, though the extent of any assistance was not immediately clear. Meanwhile, European leaders – who rushed to Washington to back up Zelenskiy – urged Trump to insist that Putin agree to a ceasefire in the 3-1/2-year-old war before any talks can advance.
