Trump’s tariff war: Russia-India-China talks gain push; Jaishankar heading to Moscow, Wang to Delhi
President Donald Trump’s tariff tantrum backfires again after India refused to bow for US pressure tactics. Chinese FM Wang Yi is likely to visit India this month to participate in Special Representative-level border talks. NSA Ajit Doval will serve as India’s Special Representative in the upcoming talks with China. India and China are working to improve ties through resumed high-level meetings and diplomatic engagement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet EAM S. Jaishankar on August 21 in Moscow. Leaders will discuss key issues on our bilateral agenda, as well as key aspects of cooperation within international frameworks. PM Modi and Xi Jinping are expected to meet at the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, later this month. China welcomed PM Modi to the SCO Tianjin Summit, aiming to boost regional cooperation and solidarity. The SCO Summit in Tianjin will be held from August 31 to September 1 with leaders from 20+ countries attending. India and China have agreed to disengage and resume patrolling in Depsang Plains and Demchok along the LAC. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has resumed, symbolizing renewed cultural diplomacy between India and China. Tourist visas between India and China have resumed after five years, reviving travel and people-to-people ties. Indian diesel cargo was shipped to China for the first time in over three years, reflecting trade revival. India and China continue to engage in forums like BRICS, SCO, and G20 despite ongoing bilateral tension. PM Modi last visited China in 2018 for informal talks in Wuhan and the SCO Summit in Qingdao. Modi and Xi last met in October 2024 during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. Both leaders welcomed patrolling agreements in Ladakh and agreed SRs should meet soon to manage border peace. MEA has yet to confirm PM Modi’s attendance at the Tianjin SCO Summit later this month.
