Rifles to armed vehicles: Civilians get military training in Venezuela as Trump-Maduro tension rises
Venezuelan military forces drove armoured vehicles vehicles and conducted weapons training for civilians in Caracas on September 20, as tensions with the United States escalated over a U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean and recent attacks on Venezuelan vessels. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello and Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino addressed supporters at the event, blasting the United States for launching strikes on boats that U.S. President Donald Trump said were carrying drug traffickers.
The training, part of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s “The Army Goes to the People” initiative, saw civilians and militia members practicing with rifles and anti-aircraft turrets.
In a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump seen by Reuters, Maduro offered to engage in direct talks with his government and rejected U.S. claims that Venezuela played a big role in drug trafficking.
