Prez Jinping’s bold move to counter Trump’s tariffs, ASEAN & China sign upgrade of free trade pact
ASEAN and China on October 28 signed an upgrade to their free trade agreement, both of them his by US tariffs. This free trade agreement expectedly includes sections on digital, green economy and other new industries. With the Free Trade Pact, China aims to strengthens its engagement with ASEAN, which has GDP of $3.8 trillion in order to counter Trump’s tariffs. The 3.0 version of free trade agreement b/w ASEAN & China was signed into effect at summit of bloc’s leaders in Malaysia. Negotiations on upgraded ASEAN-China deal began in November 2022 and concluded in May 2025.
