Pakistan’s Chaman Border with Afghanistan reopened partially for trade, transit amid ceasefire
Pakistan, Afghanistan agreed to a temporary ceasefire on Oct 15 after airstrikes and ground fighting ramped up tensions between the South Asian neighbours. Following the much anticipated truce, Pakistan has opened its side of Chaman border in Balochistan aligning with Afghanistan, reports a Pak newspaper. Transit trade vehicles and trucks have been allowed to permitted to enter Pakistan from the Afghan side, according to a Pakistan newspaper. Meanwhile Torkham border crossing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to open between 24 hours to 36 hours. Truckers stranded for days in Torkham between Pakistan and Afghanistan hope that borders reopen soon after Afghanistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire . Truck drivers said they were running out of money, vegetables, fruits as the trade and transit between the two nations remained stranded. Since Oct. 12, Pakistan closed several border crossings along the 2,600-kilometre frontier with Afghanistan following the rising tensions. The shutting off of borders has led to halting trade between the neighbours and leaving scores of goods trucks stranded on both sides. The ground fighting triggered after Islamabad demanded that Kabul rein in militants targeting Pakistan, saying they operated from havens in Afghanistan. The Taliban denies giving haven to militants to attack Pakistan and accuses the Pakistani military of spreading misinformation about Afghanistan. Kabul also accuses Pakistan of sheltering Islamic State-linked militants to undermine its stability and sovereignty.
