P. Stobdan speaks on Ladakh Violence, Govt Response, Role of Sonam Wangchuk & possible solution
Former Ambassador and Ladakh International Centre founder P. Stobdan termed the violence in Leh an “unfortunate but avoidable incident”, stressing that government delays in addressing Ladakh’s autonomy demands have fueled unrest. He explained that after the abrogation of Article 370, Ladakh was left without a legislature or strong safeguards like the Sixth Schedule, creating a governance vacuum. Stobdan suggested possible solutions such as a Sikkim-style autonomy formula, Fifth Schedule provisions, or empowering Leh and Kargil councils with greater authority. On activist Sonam Wangchuk, Stobdan said his role is often magnified by media coverage, noting that while he has agitated for long, the core challenge lies in constitutional safeguards and timely government action. Stobdan also pointed out Ladakh’s sensitive position near Pakistan and China, urging the government to find a middle path and act without further delay.
