Flash floods in central Texas claimed at least 43 lives, including 15 children, authorities said on July 05. Rescuers continued frantic search for dozens more campers, vacationers and residents who were still missing. Hardest hit was Camp Mystic; dozens of young girls swept away in the floodwaters amid devastating scenes. Deadly flood left many dead and 27 still missing as it hit the nearly century-old girls camp in Texas. Inside one cabin, mud lines indicating how high the water had risen were at least six feet from the floor, Reuters reported. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said there were 700 girls in residence of camp at the time of flood. From Kerr to Georgetown town to Comfort, Texas cities, vehicles & building submerged leading to heavy property loss. In Comfort, about 40 miles down the river, huge trees were pulled out, scattered around river by floods, with several blocking roads. However, main highway from San Antonio to affected areas remained mainly intact, some two-lane bridges severely damaged by water. Casualty toll likely rise, authorities said, as localities beyond main site of disaster in Kerr County were affected by flooding. More than 850 people rescued, including some clinging to trees, after sudden storm dumped up to 15 inches of rain, said officials. “We know that rivers rise, but nobody saw this coming,” said Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, top local official in region. Flash flood emergency largely ended for Kerr County, said National Weather Service following thunderstorms. Kerr County sits in Texas Hill Country, rural area known for rugged terrain, historic towns and tourist attractions. The floods struck around the Guadalupe River, about 137 km northwest of San Antonio, causing widespread destruction. Drone footage revealed severe damage along the Guadalupe River, with overturned trees and debris scattered across the region. Extraordinary flood took Texas with awe as Guadalupe River rose to around 29 feet after heavy rainfall.
