‘Money gaming causing harm to society”: Union Min Ashwini Vaishnaw backs ‘Online Gaming Bill 2025’
On the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Online gaming has emerged as a major sector within digital technologies. If we look at the online gaming sector, there are three segments in it. There are two out of the three segments that are very beneficial to society. There is one segment that is harmful to society. The two segments that are good for society are Esports, which is an emerging activity in the competitive sports field…There is ongoing discussion about the inclusion of Esports in the Olympics and Asian Games, which we will promote in this bill. Second is online social gaming, which is part of our daily lives, including activities like Sudoku and Chess. We will also promote this as part of the bill. The third segment, online money gaming, is causing significant harm to society. There are so many instances where, because of the addiction to online money gaming, the young people initially win some small amounts, and after that, they lose all their money. Frequently, middle-class families lose their entire life savings. It’s really painful and there are so many cases where the people who lose money they commit suicides…All these things are causing major harm to society, which is why this bill has been brought, which aims to encourage and promote the two segments that are good for the society and one segment that is harmful to the society”
