Massacre anniversary march turns explosive: Streets of fire, protesters hurl bombs at riot Police
Clashes erupted in Mexico City on Thursday (October 2) on the anniversary of a deadly 1968 protest, with some demonstrators throwing Molotov cocktails at riot police. Thousands also marched behind Comite 68 banners, with veterans of the movement leading columns into the city centre. One demonstrator, Fernando Lopez Sanchez, said instances of vandalism and clashes that broke out on Thursday distorted the march’s aim of defending the right to protest without repression. On October 2, 1968, security forces opened fire on student demonstrators, killing at least 300 people. The incident came to be known as the Tlatelolco massacre and remains a touchstone of Mexican politics.
