Major setback to China, after India, US backs Dalai Lama to choose successor “without interference”
On July 06, US State Department extended best wishes to Holiness Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. The US backed Dalai Lama’s decision to choose successor independently without any external interference. “We support efforts to preserve Tibetans’ distinct linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage”, US state press release said. Dy Assistant Secretary Bethany Poulos Morrison for Bureau of South & Central Asian Affairs read out State Dept’s statement during Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday celebration. The state dept also supports the Tibetan religious leader “ability to freely choose and venerate religious leaders without interference.” On July 02, Dalai Lama announced that GadenPhodrang Trust has sole authority to recognise future reincarnation. This ended the years of waiting by followers of Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader for details about his succession. On July 02, Chinese Foreign Ministry said, Dalai Lama’s succession through his reincarnation must be approved by China’s central govt. This escalates tension over Dalai Lama succession decision, as India has also backed Dalai Lama to choose successor independently. In a strong message to China, Union Minister KirenRijijuattended Dalai Lama’s birthday celebrations in HP’s Dharmashala.
