India’s Rice Export Boom! APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev Reveals 30% Growth & Global Expansion
Abhishek Dev, chairman of Apeda says The rice sector in India is experiencing significant growth and transformation, driven by collaboration among over 5000 exporters, farmers, and millers, alongside international buyers. Efforts are underway to enhance rice exports through events that bring stakeholders together, aiming to increase farmers’ income and awareness of international quality standards. Rice exports have seen a 25-30% increase in quantity and a 10% increase in value, with a focus on expanding exports of basmati, GI varieties, and organic rice to traditional markets like the Gulf, Africa, and ASEAN, as well as high-value markets such as the EU, USA, Latin America, and the UK. The sector benefits from GST reforms, which have reduced costs for value-added products and agricultural implements. India’s diverse rice varieties, including over 17 GI varieties, are being promoted for their suitability in international cuisines to boost demand and exports. Government support through the Ministries of Agriculture, Food Processing, and Commerce, along with state governments, provides advanced machinery, R&D, and extension services to improve rice production and quality. Innovations like AI-based sorting machines are reducing costs and manpower, further enhancing efficiency in the sector.
