India eyes Global lead in Semiconductors, aims to design AI chips, says IT Ministry official
On the growth of the semiconductor industry in India, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information Technology, Abhishek Singh said, “The industry is well known. The government has been investing in this sector to ensure that we are able to catch up with the world’s best in semiconductor manufacturing. We have started with several ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) plants…We believe that while we have started with the 28-nanometer plants, the government has plans to go to much more advanced chips…We hope that with semiconductor 2.0 and the design-linked incentive scheme coming in, we will be able to go further on the value chain and contribute to the semiconductor ecosystem.” Further on the benefits of the semiconductor industry towards AI, he said, “This (the growth of the semiconductor industry in India) will help us in moving up in the AI race. We are working towards designing AI chips and GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) in India, and when we are able to do that, we will be able to address some of the challenges that we have. ”
