From village to state: Kerala’s digital revolution empowers all ages
For 73-year-old C Sarasu from Pullamparaa, Kerala, the digital world is no longer foreign. She runs her own YouTube channel, ‘Sarasu’s World’, and enjoys reels with ease. Nearby, 103-year-old Karunakara Panicker and his 74-year-old son Rajan now watch news and stay updated via WhatsApp. Similarly, 64-year-old Padmini jokes about becoming addicted to social media, while 105-year-old MA Abdullah Maulavi Bafaqi, once limited to making calls on a basic phone, now enjoys YouTube, thanks to DigiKerala volunteers.
What began as a small pilot in Pullampara during the COVID lockdown evolved into the statewide ‘Digi Kerala’ initiative. Over 21.87 lakh Keralites, including more than 15,000 above 90, were trained in digital skills—from smartphone use to online banking and e-governance. With a 2.57 lakh-strong volunteer army and nearly 100% success rate, Kerala is set to be officially declared India’s first fully digitally literate state on August 21.
