Breaking: Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party picks Sanae Takaichi as head, on track for 1st female PM
On October 04, Sanae Takaichi won the race to lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Sanae Takaichi putting her on course to become the country’s first female PM, Reuters reported. Notably, the winner is expected to replace the current PM Ishiba as the party remains largest in parliament. However, the LDP-led coalition no longer holds majorities in either chamber, so it requires opposition’s support to work effectively. Takaichi beat Koizumi in a run-off vote after none of the five candidates won a majority in the first round of voting. The voting to choose the next prime minister in parliament is expected to be held on October 15.
