Border closures b/w Pakistan-Afghanistan pushes up prices of essential goods in both nations
Border closures between Pakistan and Afghanistan have driven up essential goods prices, with tomatoes now five times costlier in Pakistan. Fighting between the two South Asian neighbors this month has severely disrupted trade, hitting everyday items like vegetables and staples. Border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been closed since October 11 after deadly clashes and airstrikes. The fighting along their 2,600-km frontier killed dozens, marking the worst violence since the Taliban took Kabul in 2021. The prices of tomatoes, used extensively in Pakistani cooking, have jumped by over 400% to around 600 Pakistani rupees per kg. However, traders in Karachi said they were importing tomatoes from Iran which had brought down the prices.
