Big win for Afghanistan! India to reopen its embassy in Kabul 4 years after Taliban takeover
Big diplomatic shift in India-Afghan relations as EAM Jaishankar announced that New Delhi will reopen its embassy in Kabul. India had closed its embassy in 2021 after the U.S.-led NATO forces withdrew and the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan. A smaller Indian mission opened in Kabul a year later to support trade, healthcare, and humanitarian aid. About a dozen nations, including China and Russia, still operate embassies in Kabul under Taliban rule. Russia remains the only country so far to formally recognize the Taliban administration. India’s embassy upgrade announcement came as Taliban FM Muttaqi began talks with Jaishankar in New Delhi. This marks the first visit to India by a senior Taliban official since their return to power in 2021.
