Big defence deal expected soon as Russia carries out studies to manufacture Sukhoi’s Su-57 in India
After an intense Modi-Putin display of ‘friendship’ at SCO in Beijing, another leap in the ties expected to take place soon. Russia-India seem ready to expand partnership in defense sector with manufacturing of Sukhoi’s Su-57. Russia is carrying out studies to determine the level of investment required to produce the 5th gen fighter jet in India: Sources. The development comes after bilateral meeting b/w PM Modi and President Putin at SCO Summit in China on Sept 01. India has long stated the requirement of at least two to three squadrons of fifth-generation fighter jets. Now, Russian Su-57 seem to have taken an edge against the other contender for the project, American F-35. HAL already licensed manufactures of Russian origin Su-30 MKI fighter jets in its Nashik facility. This facility can be used for production of proposed Su-57 jet if everything in the process goes well. India-Russia are coming closer when US administration busy in attacking Indian Govt and impose tariffs on the businesses. Trump imposed secondary tariffs of about 50% on India for not ceasing its oil purchases from Russia. Recently, Trump aide Peter Navarro Russia-Ukraine war “Modi’s war” for buying Russian oil. Although these harsh measures did not go as expected for the US as India-Russia came even closer since then. Number of defence projects discussed b/w the two nations in recent past, including S-500 & S-400 air defence systems. However, US is also trying to push the F-35 deal with India, to increase defence partnership with India. Notably, India is also developing its own 5th gen fighter jet, AMCA in pursuit of self-reliance in defence sector.
