Bandipora’s Forest Training School imparting skill training to forester and Forest Guards in J&K
The Forest Training School, Chitternar Bandipora, established in 1911, stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious forestry training institutions in India, being the second such school set up in the country. The institute has remained committed to producing a skilled workforce for the Department of Forests by imparting specialized training to Foresters and Forest Guards — the backbone of field-level forest management. The duration of training is one year for Foresters and six months for Forest Guards. The training curriculum is comprehensive, blending classroom-based theoretical knowledge with practical field experience. Practical exposure forms the cornerstone of the training. Field visits are regularly organized to plantation sites, departmental nurseries, plantation closures, and medicinal plant nurseries. Trainees are also taken to different forest divisions across Jammu and Kashmir to acquaint them with ongoing departmental and developmental works. Such exposure ensures that they remain updated, active, and well-informed about modern forestry practices and conservation strategies. In addition, trainees are introduced to plantation practices, patrolling exercises, and the use of modern tools and equipment in forest protection.
