Amid Gaza carnage, Trump unveils polarizing 21-point ceasefire gambit redrawing ‘fault’ lines
As war in Gaza enters 2nd year, humanitarian conditions deteriorate to catastrophic levels, US revealed sweeping 21-point proposal aimed for ending Gaza war. The proposal, details of which were obtained by The Times of Israel, was introduced on the sidelines of the 80th UNGA in New York. After what Trump termed a “very successful” meeting with key international leaders, Trump expressed optimism, Israel would soon join ongoing negotiations. Speaking to reporters, Trump mentioned, “I think we can work something out on Gaza,” emphasized urgency by declaring, “It’s time to stop now”. US Prez remarks came against backdrop of mounting international outrage over humanitarian crisis in Gaza. According to The Times of Israel, 21-point roadmap, largely crafted by US reflects a dramatic shift in Trump admin’s position. From previously entertaining the idea of relocating Gaza’s population, new plan instead emphasizes local rehabilitation, disarmament of militant groups. As reported by The Times of Israel, US’ 21 points plan envisions Gaza as de-radicalized, terror-free zone, no longer posing threat to neighbours. The war will end as soon as both sides agree, with Israel halting military operations and beginning withdrawal. All hostages living & deceased will be returned within 48 hours, followed by the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners by Israel. Gaza will be governed by a temporary technocratic government of Palestinians, supervised by a new international body led by the US. Hamas will be excluded from governance, Gaza must be fully demilitarized, existing offensive military infra, including tunnels, will be dismantled. The plan marks notable departure from Trump’s earlier rhetoric, including controversial remark of mass relocation of Gaza’s population, as per Times of Israel. Now, by explicitly encouraging Palestinians to remain in Gaza, rebuilding their homeland. Meanwhile, the plan’s proposal to eventually discuss Palestinian statehood could trigger fierce opposition from Israeli PM Netanyahu. While the 21-point proposal has been cautiously welcomed by some Arab, European leaders, it remains “light on details,” according to analysts. Nevertheless, US President Trump’s initiative could redefine US engagement in Middle East. Potentially positioning Washington not just as Israel’s staunchest ally but also as a credible broker of long-term peace. As humanitarian cost of war continues to mount, proposal may be last viable blueprint standing b/w continued devastation and fragile, but necessary, peace.
