Afghans call for Blue Mosque’s repair after 6.3 magnitude earthquake damages historic site
Northern Afghan residents urge government help to rebuild a historic mosque hit by a 6.3 quake. The Hazrat Ali Shrine, or Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, suffered cracked minarets and broken tiles. Despite visible quake damage, no repairs have started yet, and the mosque remains open to visitors. The November 3 earthquake near Mazar-i-Sharif killed 27, injured nearly 1,000, and destroyed homes. Aid groups warn the quake’s toll is worrying as freezing Afghan winter temperatures approach.
