3-member panel submits Sambhal violence report to CM Yogi; Muslim leaders call it personal opinions
A three-member panel submitted a 450-page report to CM Yogi Adityanath on the Sambhal violence. The three-tier judicial inquiry committee investigated the November 2024 Sambhal violence and submitted a detailed report, including earlier episodes of unrest. The report also mentioned key demographic changes in Sambhal, noting a significant rise in the Muslim population percentage. A significant demographic shift was recorded, the Muslim population increased from 55% to 85% since independence. In contrast, the Hindu population has decreased to 15% in the Sambhal Nagar Palika area. The Muslim side commented on the report, saying: “These are personal opinions and findings; the report is not the final court order”. The Hindu side stated, “The committee has submitted the report; we will have to wait and see the results.” On 24 November 2024, violence erupted in Sambhal after a court ordered the ASI to survey the Shahi Jama Masjid. Violence erupted when local Muslims clashed with police outside the masjid, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to several others, including officials. Police recorded 12 FIRs and made 80 arrests, and a three-tier judicial inquiry commission was formed to investigate the violence.
